See Nigeria grow from Lagos Colony to become an Independent country
This collection contains annual reports compiled by successive British colonial administrations in Nigeria and Cameroon. The documents cover the period from the establishment of the Colony and Protectorate of Lagos to the creation of an independent Nigerian state. The Annual Departmental Reports are therefore a useful resource for those who wish to study the development and eventual dissolution of British imperialism in West Africa. The reports are divided into ten sections for convenience. These are Administration, Finance, Judicial and Police, Natural Resources, Social Services, Transport and Public Works, Communications and Post Office Savings, Commerce, Miscellaneous, and reports relating to the British Cameroons.
Note: (1) This collection is intended to complement an earlier British Online Archives volume entitled ‘Nigeria, 1862-1945’, which is part of the ‘Colonial Africa in Statistics, 1821-1953’ collection; (2) further information on the Annual Departmental Reports relating to Nigeria and the British Cameroons can be found in the guide to the microfilm edition, written by David C. Dorward.
