Judicial and Police, 1899-1960

The maintenance of 'law and order' was regarded by the colonial government of Nigeria to be one of its principal functions. On 1st April 1930, the Police Forces of the Northern and Southern Provinces were amalgamated to form an integrated Nigerian Police Force; this was followed by the union of the Northern and Southern Provinces' Prison Services In 1938 to form the Nigerian Prison Department.
