Collection: Establishing the Post-War International Order, 1944-1961    Volumes    Documents relating to the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT), 1947-1961

The General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT) is an international accord that aims for the “substantial reduction of tariffs and other trade barriers and the elimination of preferences, on a reciprocal and mutually advantageous basis.” The treaty was ratified by 23 nations in Geneva on 30th October 1947. Between 1947 and 1961, the terms of GATT were amended through four additional rounds of negotiation.

This volume contains records on GATT compiled by seven British government departments during the same period—the Board of Trade, Cabinet Office, Commonwealth Relations Office, Foreign Office, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Prime Minister's Office, and Treasury.
