The Blackshirt, 1933-1939
Collection: The British Union of Fascists: Newspapers and Secret Files, 1933-1951 Volumes The Blackshirt, 1933-1939
The Blackshirt was a weekly, then monthly, newspaper published by the BUF during the period 1933-1939. The Blackshirt served to complement Action, targeting card-carrying members of the party. From 1st June 1934, it incorporated the short-lived periodical Fascist Week under the banner "The official organ of the British Union of Fascists."
Numbered issues first appeared in January 1938 (No. 247), when the party decided to change to a monthly magazine format. In September 1938, issues were split between three editions: southern, East London, and, though none appear to have survived, northern. Each was eight pages in length, the inner pages (p.3-6) being identical, with the outer pages (p.1-2 & p.7-8) being slanted towards regional news and issues. In this collection, Nos. 254-259 are reproduced as The Blackshirt: southern or Southern Blackshirt edition, while nos. 260-261, the last available, are entitled Blackshirt: East London.

Whilst we try our best to extract as much usable and searchable as possible, our primary resource collections have varying levels of available metadata and searchable OCR'd text depending on the nature of the document; please bear this in mind when searching, especially when looking for older resources. We recommend trying the following:
- Try a different combination of terms and queries to try and match your result.
- Use 'themes' or 'subjects' directly in your search query, e.g. "19th century colonial administration Africa" - 'Africa' being the broad subject.
- Try using the advanced search facility.
- Use a broader search and use the filters on the left-hand side to refine your results.
