Dissertations, etc., 1800-1899

Collection: Essays and Dissertations of the Scottish Royal Medical Society, 1751-1970    Volumes    Dissertations, etc., 1800-1899
This second series of dissertations, covering the 19th century, includes topics which demonstrate the influence of developments in other fields of science, for example electricity, had on medicine. Hence one finds research on "The therapeutic properties of electricity" by John Hay in 1841/2 (v.106, p. 1037), "The uses of electricity" by Augustus B. Calder in 1877 (v.147, p.575), and "On medical electricity" by William Hunter in 1883/4 (v.154, p.34), building on the investigation of William Allanby (v. 21, p.394) during the previous century, which asked "May not many of the phenomena observed in electrified bodies and explained upon the supposition of a repulsive power, be more satisfacorily accounted for, upon the principle of attraction? and in what disease is the use of electricity most beneficial?"Among many other subjects, the first half of the century is also marked by continuing enquiries "On the varieties of the human race", with three dissertations presented under that title: one by J.C. Prichard in 1807/8 (v.58), a second by Henry H. Cheek in 1829/30 (v.91), and a third by W.B. Baikie in 1845-47 (v.109, p.1281). To these can be added William Hutcheson's question in 1836/7 (v.101, p.105): "What inferences may be drawn from geology regarding the antiquity of the human race compared with that of other animals?"For help in finding relevant dissertations, see the fully keyword-searchable author/title index.
