Dissertations, etc., 1751-1799

Collection: Essays and Dissertations of the Scottish Royal Medical Society, 1751-1970    Volumes    Dissertations, etc., 1751-1799
These eighteenth-century volumes (vol. 1-42) are mostly arranged in chronological order, bearing a variety of titles, including: Medical news; Medical dissertations read before the Medical Society of Edinburgh; Cases [or Questions] with comments by members of the Royal Medical Society, commencing in [...]; and frequently Records of the Royal Medical Society. The topics covered here are broader than medicine, including enquiries which perhaps anticipate Charles Darwin's ideas on evolution. For example, in 1773 (v.5, p.9), Edward Mease presented a dissertation in answer to an issue raised by H. Cullen: "May we attribute the differences which are observable in the human race to the effects of moral & physical causes or must we conclude that mankind has consisted of distinct species from the beginning of the world?" Then, in 1794/5 (v.31, p. 274), R.E. Taylor addressed the question: "What are the causes of the varieties of complexion in the human species?"While most volumes begin with a table of contents, the collection includes comprehensive indices a fully keyword-searchable author/title index.
